Edward A. Ryan is Executive Vice President and Global General Counsel of Marriott International, Inc. He was promoted to this position in November 2006, following ten years in the Marriott International law department, which he joined in May, 1996 as an Assistant General Counsel. During that ten year period, Mr. Ryan was involved in all aspects of Marriott’s business, including both North American and International development, lodging operations, franchising, crisis administration, risk management, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, litigation and asset management.
During his tenure at Marriott, Mr. Ryan has worked closely with most of Marriott’s major full-service owners, and has spoken at several conferences and forums on a range of issues including crisis management and hotel management agreements. Prior to joining Marriott, Mr. Ryan was a partner at the law firm of Hogan & Hartson (now known as Hogan Lovells) in Washington, D.C. which he joined in 1984. Mr. Ryan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, cum laude, in 1978, where he was an editor of the Law Review, and the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences, summa cum laude, in 1975, where he was also a member of Varsity Lightweight Crew. Mr. Ryan lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Catie, and two children, Moira and Connor, and continues to row on the Potomac River.
